The Indianapolis Zoo is a world-class facility that hosts one million visitors annually and plays a major role in worldwide conservation and research, including accomplishing the world’s first successful artificial insemination of an African elephant. The zoo is known for awarding the biennial Indianapolis Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in conservation. As of 2018, the zoo was home to nearly 1,300 specimens of more than 200 species.

The zoo was founded in 1964 in Indianapolis' Washington Park. In 1988, the Indianapolis Zoo is relocated to White River State Park after a $64 million expansion. It is the only attraction accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) and the American Association of Museums as a zoo, an aquarium, and a botanic garden. At 64 acres, the Indianapolis Zoo is the second-largest zoo by area in the state, after Evansville's Mesker Park Zoo.
