In 1833, the National Road and bridge were extended to the west bank of White River. Reportedly, a string of homes sprang up along the road, giving the area -- then agricultural ---- its name. By the 1870s, German and Irish immigrants moved in. After 1913, the area was populated by whites from Southern states lured to Indianapolis by factory jobs. Its population is 1,875, 80 percent white.
