Plainfield's oldest park, Franklin Park was founded in 1935 at the corner of Mill Street and Lincoln Street on the north end of town. Named for Charles "Sap" Franklin, the town's first marshal, the park encompasses 35 acres, and like Friendship Gardens and Hummel Park, is located along White Lick Creek.
Because of its age, Franklin Park boasts many mature shade trees. Amenities in the park include 2 shelter houses, 4 lighted tennis courts, a skateboard area, 4 lighted ball diamonds, 2 concession stands, playground equipment, a private play area for children under six, a volleyball pit, several horseshoe pits and exercise stations. Many of Plainfield's youth league baseball programs are played on the ball diamonds at Franklin Park.

  • In the 1960's there was a 1/4 Midget race track in the Northwest corner of the park. The cars were gasoline powered and piloted by pre-teen youths. It was a fun and exciting place to attend on a Saturday night. The track "walls" were made of bales of straw. If a car stalled on the track, a couple of adults would grab onto the bumper bars on both end and haul the car and kid up onto and over the hay bales. There also used to be an old railroad line and bridge that ran across the creek at the time. I looks like the area is now a parking lot for the baseball field.
