"Harbourwood" Farm Complex (Cove Neck, New York)

USA / New York / Cove Neck / Cove Neck, New York
LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, outbuilding

James Stuart Blackton Sr. never built a main house on the 54 acre "Harbourwood" estate that spanned the width of Cove Neck. In 1914 he commissioned Hoppin and Koen to design a federal style farm complex, caretaker's cottage and boathouse. All but the last still survive.

The estate was sold to William Bateman Leeds Jr., heir to the American Tin Plate Company fortune founded by his father William B. Leeds Sr., the "Tinplate King". Leeds renamed the estate Kenwood. Leeds was married in 1921 to Princess Xenia Georgievna Romanov, daughter of Grand Duke George Mihailovich of Russia and Princess Maria Georgievna of Greece and Denmark. They divorced in 1930, but were an influential couple in Long Island Gold Coast society.

Early in his career the tennis star John McEnroe purchased the farm complex buildings as a home for him and his parents who lived there from the mid 1980's until 2000.
