Thia is actually the downtown 'core' of HRM. The municipality comprises the former Cities of Halifax and Dartmouth, as well as the town of Bedford, the village(s) of Upper, Middle and Lower Sackville, and the old Municipality of the County of Halifax.

According to Statistics Canada 2006 National Census, the population was 372,600 with 282,900 living in the "urban core". The former figure represents 15% or 16% of the total population of Atlantic Canada. The area of Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is approximately 5,500 km2. About the size of Prince Edward Island, or about 20% smaller than Banff National Park. The rocky coastline of HRM is ~420km long and is heavily indented. Forests and lakes cover much of the rolling landscape, with some small farms located in the interior, particularly in the Musquodoboit Valley. There are some small sandy beaches in the western part of the municipality with some larger, often completely deserted ones located in the sparsely inhabited eastern part. The former cities of Halifax and Dartmouth were founded by the British in 1749 and 1750 respectively. The area was first settled by First Nations peoples, which they called Chebucto.
