Formerly the Glasgow College of Building and Printing, and was originally constructed in the early 1960s as part of a new wave of colleges in the area. Opened in 1964, the 14-storey tower was based on the work of Le Corbusier, most notably its strange looking roof structures - one of which is a gymnasium. With its glass frontage, and white limestone gable ends it has often been compared to the UN Tower in New York. In 2012 it was awarded Grade B listed status from Historic Scotland, and became colloqually known as the "Met Tower" when Glasgow merged all its FE colleges into the "Glasgow Metropolitan College".
The building fell into disuse in 2014, when City of Glasgow College opened its new "supercampus" further along the road on Cathedral Street, and later gained some notoriety when it was used to display a giant pink advertising placard entitled "People Make Glasgow" for the Commonwealth Games. As the tower began to look more unloved, it soon started to attract the unfortunate title of "Ugliest Building in Scotland".
In 2022, the building was acquired by a property development company who intend to convert it into high quality offices for new technology startups. Part of the plan involves the construction of a second 10 storey tower behind the original, which led to the demolition of the concrete podium structure on Cathedral Street in 2023.
