Halabiye Fortress

Syria / Dayr-az-Zawr / Dayr az-Zawr /
 ruins, archaeological site, Roman Empire

Founded 273 AC by Zenobia, the Queen of the state of Palmyra, the Roman later enforced the city fortress as part of the Oriental Limes. It was mainly designed to check the Euphrates River, as close to the site, the river could be crossed in summer by a ford (this would explain the existance of the twin-fortress of Zalabiyah on the other side of the river). In 610, Zenobia was destroyed by the Sassanides and lost any significance. Nevertheless, the ruins are still very impressive, especially the city wall with its towers and the citadel.
