General area of the old Sasanid city of Dastagird or Dastkart, known in Syriac as Dasqarta de-Malka and in Arabic as Daskarah al-Malik. The city possibly stood on the site of Hellenistic Artemita and served as a royal residence, after being redeveloped in the reigns of Hormizd I and Khusraw I (after whom it was formally styled Khosrow-shad-Kavad). In 628 the city was taken by the Byzantine emperor Herakleios during his invasion of the Sasanid Empire. Although it declined in importance, it was still in existence during the 10th century. The only significant remnant of the ancient town can is a section of a large fortified enclosure called al-Zindan.
