Bruny Isthmus

Australia / Tasmania / Kingston-Blackmans Bay /

The Neck Game Reserve is situated on the isthmus shown above joining North and South Bruny Islands. An isthmus is a slender strip of land that joins two larger landmasses. Here the isthmus is just 120 m (about 394 ft) wide. The northern tip of the Islands is about 20 km (12.5 mi) south of Hobart, the capital of Tasmania. The first photo was taken from the top of the Truganini Stairs and is looking south. The 2nd looks north from the same point. At the base of the stairs, to the left, is a penguin rookery. Here, there are viewing platforms where you can observe both short-tailed shearwaters (Puffinus tenuirostris) and Little Blue, or Fairy Penguins (Eudyptula minor).
