Hurricane Charley passed directly over Captiva Island near Cayo Costa with peak winds of 150 mph (240 km/h). The Category 4 hurricane produced an estimated storm surge of up to 6.5 ft (2 m) on the island, which is lower than expected for a storm of its intensity; the decrease in the height of the surge was due to the hurricane's small size. Despite that the storm surge, combined with the strong pressure gradient, was able to produce a ¼ mi (450 m) inlet on North Captiva Island, known as Charley's Cut. Eventually continued deposition of sand filled the inlet and connected the two halves of North Captiva Island back together.
