Established 16 May 1917 as Camp Alfred Vail. Redesignated 6 August 1925 as Fort Monmouth. The post was selected for closure by the Base Realignment and Closure Commission in 2005. Most Army functions and personnel were required to be moved to Army facilities in Maryland, such as Aberdeen Proving Ground, and Ohio by 2011. The fort officially closed on September 15, 2011.

Many of the US Army's communications commands are at Ft. Monmouth, though due to the BRAC directives, these offices will be moved to Aberdeen Proving Ground MD.

Julius Rosenberg had worked there as a radar inspector 1942 and 1943 and was accused and convicted of stealing proximity fuze plans and passing them on to the Soviet Union.

Formerly home to the 1st Signal Company from 1923 to 1941, and the 51st Signal Battalion from 1921 to 1941.

As of 2010, the state of New Jersey will be re-purposing the area for mixed development, focusing particularly on high tech industries.
