Columbia Icefield

Canada / British Columbia / Golden /
 glacier, ice field

The Columbia Icefield is a surviving remnant of the thick ice mass that once mantled most of Western Canada's mountains. The Athabasca is the most-visited glacier on the North American continent. Situated across from the Icefield Centre, its ice is in continuous motion, creeping forward at the rate of several centimetres per day.

SAFETY NOTE: every year visitors fail to obey warning signs posted by Parks Canada to ensure public safety. This failure to obey signs consistently results in the pointless injury and death of visitors. Not only this but it burdens Parks Canada with the task of having to rescue the person or recover the body from the ice field putting Parks staff un-necessarily at risk. Please people, obey the signs, be safe, and don't venture out on to the glacier unless you have extensive mountaineering experience and have done your own due diligence to ensure your safety and the safety of your party.

  • Hi I'm Virginia's daughter and my dad and I found the place for her. My mom gave up after about a minute, then my dad looked around a bit and gave up and let me try. After I read the part about wether paterns my dad knew right away because he thought about Chinooks. That was a lot of fun...thanks for sharing that with everyone.
  • This was really fun. It took me a long time but I love a challenge. How many Glaciers are there in the range?
