Begun by the Baron of Castelnau in about 1100, the castle was enlarged and refitted on a number of occasions up to the 17th century. It was headed toward ruin until Jean Mouliérat, tenor in the Comic Opera of Paris, bought the castle in 1896 and spent years of his life restoring and refurnishing it.
