When Friends migrated to this area of central Long Island in 1695, Thomas Powell purchased land from the Indians so that Friends could worship without being taxed by the Church of England. Meetings for worship were held in his home. The Bethpage Preparative Meeting was funded in 1697 when the Meeting was recognized by Flushing Monthly Meeting.

The First meetinghouse was built in 1741. It burned in 1810 and a larger building and school were built. The second meetinghouse was destroyed by fire in the blizzard of 1888. The present building dates from 1890. Originally it stood on the north side of Meeting House Road. When Bethpage State Park was created in 1936 the building was moved across the road to a site adjacent to the cemetery. After severe damage by fire in 1990 the building has been restored and opened for worship in April 1992. Bethpage is now a Preparative Meeting under Jericho Monthly Meeting.
