County seat of Montgomery County. Its population is 810. Home of the Fonda Fair, Fonda is the only village in the Town of Mohawk. Its Native American name was Caughnawaga. It came to be known as Fonda during the time of New Netherland, when New York was part of New Netherland. Henry Fonda's family settled there during the 17th century, after fleeing to The Netherlands from Italy. Most Natives from the area were massacred or pushed out of the area. A monument stands in their honor to the west of the village, at the Kateri Shrine.

The village was incorporated in 1850.
