Vermillion County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 16,788. The county seat is Newport6. It is included in the Terre Haute, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. Vermillion County is the narrowest and longest county in Indiana. It is almost 60 miles long and no more than 13 miles wide.

History
Vermillion County was formed February 1, 1824. It was named for the southbound Vermilion River, which flows nearby. The extra "l" in its name distinguishes it from the adjacent Vermilion County, Illinois. This is one of few cases in the United States in which a county borders its namesake in another state.

* Vermillion County is divided into 5 Civil Townships as follows: Clinton, Eugene, Helt, Highland and Vermillion.
* Vermillion County was organized January 2, 1824 becoming effective February 1, 1824.
* Newport is the County Seat. Laid out in 1835, by S. S. Collett, in 1849 it had a population of 250.
* The Courthouse at Newport was destroyed by fire on two occasions, January 24, 1844, and on January 5, 1866. At neither time were the county records lost.
* According to the Society of Indiana Pioneers, an individual was a pioneer of our county if they resided here on or before December 31, 1830.
* Indiana automobile License Plates issued in Vermillion County start with the prefix 83 because it is the eighty-third county in alphabetical listing.

  • Number 28 in my list of counties to be traced out. Anybody living in these counties that wishes to put in information about them is more than welcome to. I only know more about Southwestern Indiana than the rest of the state, so I am only limited to what information I do know about them.
