When Aurangzeb attacked Maratha kingdom in the 1680s his generals claimed that they would capture this fort of marathas in a days from the son of Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Maharaj who was the maratha king at that time. It took them six and a half years to capture it such was the resistance offered by the marathas!
