3-story pier building designed c. 1952 by Emil H. Praeger as the Marine & Aviation pier for the New York City Marine & Aviation Department. It was intended to be fireproof and exceptionally strong structurally. The facade facing the highway is faced in beige brick and concrete, with two wings flanking a taller center section.
It faithfully served as a Grace Line shipping terminal and cargo warehouse until the 1960s, when it was transformed into an MTA bus depot. It doubled as NYCTA's Hudson Pier Depot between 1971 and 2003. In 2003, this enormous shell was abandoned by the city, only to gain infamy during the 2004 Republican National Convention, when it was used as a jail for thousands of protestors.
Construction is now underway for an enormous market at Pier 57. Designed and developed by YoungWoo & Associates, it is being re-branded the SuperPier. It has 270,000 square feet of leasable space inside. The empty halls of the Marine & Aviation building will be filled with 460 shipping containers, repurposed into shops and food stands.
Down in the caissons, 56 steps under the Hudson River, three huge, empty concrete boxes support most of the weight of the pier's structure. They were originally used for cargo storage in the 1950s. SuperPier hopes to put a bathhouse, a rock climbing gym, and a children's playground inside these underwater spaces, which contain 40,000 square feet of leasable space as developed by RXR Realty.
The building's main rooftop will be a park open to the public, with about 3.5 acres of space. The new interior was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Higgins Quasebarth & Partners.
