Hoults Yard is situated two miles east of the City Centre in Byker ward. It is a 3 hectare complex built in 1878 specifically for the Maling Pottery establishment. It is a large, solidly built structure owned by Hoults Estates Ltd since the 1960s. After the closure of Maling Pottery, the site provided accommodation for Hoults Estates and floorspace rented out to other local businesses, mainly for manufacturing, storage and office uses.

  • I remember as a schoolgirl going with my auntie Nelly Oliver to pick up her pay from Maling Pottery ,because she had T B as a child and had bad asthma so she had a week off work sick. I cant tell you how much Id enjoyed looking around the factory and made my mind up there and then that thats the place I was going to work when I left school, as I walked around I saw a lass hand painting gold lines with her very steady had on the top of bone china cups I walked over and stood behind another lass who very carefuly was putting transfers on small glasses. when Nelly was ready to go I did nt want to leave I was enjoying it so much. any way the time came when Id turned 15 years old I leaft Welbeck Road girls school and I walked into the dole on Welbeck Rd the woman said to me what kind of work do you want todo , I said I want to work at Maylings pottery ,I felt like crying when she said Iam sorry pet but they closed down! so I ended up working at the quilt factory then Crowfords soft drinks the Tizer before going on to train as a nurse but I know in my heart that if Malings had stayed open I would have worked there untill I retired ,there was just something about the the place .
  • I understand that Maling Pottery was mostly white but that they did make some other types before closing. I have a piece of this in a vase and I am curios about it. I forget the name of the colored pottery.
  • Lovely to hear your little story Dolly - the late Les Dixon (pottery manager) was a personal friend for a number of years. Maling continues to intrigue all collectors and we must never forget what Maling still stands for - Trademark of Excellence!
  • Maling made some of the best quality decorated pieces during the 1920's and 1930's. Most can stand proudly with the likes of Wedgwood, Doulton and Moorcroft on any day of the week. The Boullemiers (father and son) were superior designers and artists.
