In 2011 Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI) of Thailand purchased the mothballed Teesside steel works from Tata Steel, and is currently investing huge sums of capital to restore and rejuvenate the steel works.

The Teesside iron and steel making facility is fully integrated from raw material agglomeration, coke making, through to iron & steel making and power generation. The blast furnace at Redcar is the second largest blast furnace in Europe is linked to a modern steel making facility, which has an annual steel slab production capacity of 3.5 million tonnes. The steel slab is exported to Thailand.
