The blast furnace is a landmark at the mouth of the River Tees. Much of this area is reclaimed from marshland using blast furnace slag.
New Owner SSI UK (Sahaviriya Steel Industries of Thailand) purchased the mothballed steelmaking facilities from Tata Steel in 2011, and in April 2012 restarted the blast furnace at Redcar.
