Capitol Building (Williamsburg, Virginia)

parliament, capitol building, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, interesting place, 1934_construction

The reconstructed capitol building served as the meeting place for the House of Burgesses, one of the oldest legislative bodies in the New World. What began as a mirror of Parliament, became the incubator of the desire for freedom and liberty that led to Virginia becoming one of the leaders in the independence movement. The fundamental liberties that Americans cherish today were debated here and ended in the creation of a new government founded on ideas, not monarchy, that endure today.

  • Photo of Capitol Building courtesy of me, photo taken by me in August 2005.
  • Is this the building in which Patrick Henry gave his "liberty or death" speech?
  • No. That speech was given at St. John's Church in Richmond.
