Former NYSC Middle Yard (Camden, New Jersey)

USA / New Jersey / Gloucester City / Camden, New Jersey
place with historical importance, shipyard, shipbuilding

Just prior to the United States' entry to World War I, NYSC began construction on four additional open slipways and machine shops to the south of their original facilities. When completed, this area became known as the Middle Yard.

The Middle Yard had four single ways capable of conversion into two huge single ways for the construction of ships up to 1,000 feet in length. This yard saw heavy use in the building of Light Cruisers and Light Aircraft Carriers during WWII and was also used to construct large gun turret assemblies. After the war, the site eventually fell into disuse.

Currently the site of the middle yard has been filled in and is being used by several industrial firms.
