  • At one point, before the construction of the Bay Bridge Tunnel, ferry boats were used to cross the bay. This was the eastern or northern terminus of the ferry route. Just off shore you can see the hulls of a number of World War Two built concrete vessels scuttled here as breakwaters. Among the vessels scuttled here were the USMC C1-S-D1 types ARTHUR NEWELL TALBOT, RICHARD KIDDER MEADE, WILLIS A. SLATER, LEONARD CHASE WASON, JOHN GRANT, ROBERT WHITMAN LESLEY, EDWIN THATCHER, WILLARD A. POLLARD, and WILLIAM FOSTER COWHAM, all pioneers in the use of concrete, since the vessels were built out of concrete. All of them were scuttled in December 1948.
