Yep, named for THE Poinsett, Dr Joel Roberts Poinsett, who noticed and popularized the red-leaved Mexican plant we call the Poinsettia. Joel Roberts Poinsett was born in Charles Town (Charleston) in 1779. He served the US in Latin America under a number of titles we would call "Ambassador" or "CIA Station Chief" today. He was also an amateur botanist and successful politician.
