The church of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki is one of the most remarkable churches in "Asenov" Neighborhood. Here in 1185, the brothers Asen and Peter announced the start of an insurrection against the Byzantine suzerainty, and therefore proclaimed the capital of Tarnovo Bulgaria. The successful outcome of the revolt marked the beginning of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The tsars (kings) Petar, Asen I and Kaloyan (1185-1207) were most probably inaugurated here.
On the location of the church, were discovered remains of two sanctuaries that served the cult of the Thracian tribes who inhabited the region.
The church was restored in 1985.
