The original runway at Groom Lake when it first built in the mid-50's. At that time it was known as Watertown Airstrip and was home to the CIA's U-2 spy plane program. The runway was repaved and became the primary taxiway in September 1960 as the base was undergoing significant expansion in preparation for the arrival of the CIA's A-12 "OXCART" program.
