National architecture heritage. The initiative to build the cathedral came from the metropolotan Gavriil Bănulescu-Bodoni during his term (1812–1821), and in 1817 the first urban zoning plan indicates the place where it was subsequently rased. The construction, however, was undertaken and finished during the term of his successor, archbishop Dumitru Sulima (1821–1844). Besides the original (central) "Birth of Christ" altar, subsequently two more altars were added: southern "Alexander Nevski" and northern "St. Nicolas Mirlikysky" by the Empir-style Russian architect A. I. Melnikov.
