Târgoviște (alternative spelling: Tîrgoviște; Romanian pronunciation: [tɨrˈɡoviʃte]) is a city in the Dâmbovița county of Romania. It is situated on the right bank of the Ialomiţa River.
As of 2011 census data, Târgoviște has a population of 73,964, making it the 26th largest city in Romania. One village, Priseaca, is administered by the city.
The city was first founded during the period of the Second Bulgarian Empire in the 12th century, the Royal Court ("Curtea Domnească"), was probably built during this time by the early Vlach Voievods. It became the capital of the Wallachian voivodship, probably during the reign of Mircea cel Bătrân. Vlad III Dracula later added the Chindia Tower, now a symbol of the city.

  • Probably the romanian town was established by bulgarians. I have a few friends from this town, which are ethnic bulgarians. Their grand-grand.. parents settled here 200-300 years ago. Also, on wikipedia is wriiten that the name is of slavic origin.
  • Anything about the toponym? There is a town in Bulgaria with exactly the same name.
  • bulgarian etnics are estabilshed in east side of the town (Sarbi or Matei Voievod Neighborhood) and they are a very strong and united comunity, with specific culture and very beautiful traditions (s.a. Tudorița). They are also famous vegetable growers.
