Comments

  • Do NOT carry "spare change" when walking around The Plaza.
  • ... unless of course you care about your fellow man, then do. Can you say "self-righteous"?
  • Arcata Food Not Bombs may still serve meals here at 5:00pm on Saturdays. The local politics around use of the plaza are touchy. Arcata is a college town undergoing gentrification after an article about how underpriced the homes in this progressive rural cultural ecotopia were. Housing prices doubled in 6 months. The arcata plaza is somewhat of a waypoint for travelling street anarchists during the summer. The corner of 9th and H was at one time a notorious drug hustling point, with shaggy people hanging out on the corner hustling 8ths of cannabis. Naturally some people don't like this, and others insist that the street scene there be tolerated. There's some tension between the anarch-hippies, the eco-yuppies, and the large student population which makes up about 6500 of the towns population of 16,500 during the fall and winter. A lot of students leave for the summer.
