Mentioned by Chaucer in The Canterbury Tales (1386). It was here that the pilgrims crossed a stream which ran approximately along Albany Road. The adjacent building (322 Old Kent Road) was until recently the "Thomas a Beckett" pub, named after the 12th Century Archbishop of Canterbury whose murder led to the establishment of the pilgrimage shrine.
