Peckham (London)

United Kingdom / England / London
 district, draw only border

Peckham is a large suburban centre in the London Borough of Southwark. It has never had its own Parish or Borough to control but has a strong sense of identity (although an unfortunate reputation): it is often described as having traditional London working class alongside foreign communities, particularly in South Peckham.

Like so many suburban areas of London, Peckham was a village swallowed up by London and developed as a residential area. Dilapidated old housing in North Peckham was redeveloped in the 1960s and we all know what that means - it became one of the most deprived areas of the UK. But work has been done, including the new Library and the area has seen steady improvement.

Peckham is also one of the centers of the Nigerian-British community, and is sometimes referred to as "Yorubatown" or "Little Lagos".
