This small building marks what was the outfall of a medieval sewer which was notoriously smelly, even by the standards of the day. It is believed to have been a natural stream in origin, probably the Lock Stream, which flowed from the fields where Waterloo Station now stands, the course of the stream long ago lost under the streets.
