Established in 1954 as part of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, the Kure District is one of five regional commands of the JMSDF which act in concert to guard the waters of their jurisdictions and provide shore-based support to their assigned vessels and commands. With an Area of Responsibility encompassing much of Japan's Southern and Southeastern coast and waters comprising Japan's Exclusive Economic Zones in the Pacific, the Kure District is also home to several supply, ammunition and fuel depots as well as being located alongside extensive ship repair and refit yards which support both its assigned vessels and rotating JMSDF assets.

As well as serving as the headquarters for its own operations, the Kure Naval District is also the headquarters for the following major JMDSF Commands, among several others:
