The site was originally called Indian Camp Plantation (slave dwellings), acquired by the state of Louisiana in 1884 to be a leprosy center. In 1921 it was reorganized as the US Public Health Service Hospital at Carville at which time leprosy was renamed Hansen's disease. The center provided schools, ranging from elementary to vocational training for some 300 residents requiring prolonged hospitalization. Also on site are swimming pools, tennis courts and other sporting facilities.

It has since been converted to an alternative school for at risk teens, administered by the Louisiana National Guard.
