Veien Cultural Heritage Park

The park has been developed to take care of an area of cultural heritage covering a long period of Norwegian history. In this area objects dating back to the Stone Age, and graves from 900 BC to about AD 1000 have been found.

The name Veien, which probably means a sacred place in the field, tells us that we are on holy ground. The graves and the traces of settlement discovered during excavations in recent years prove that religious as well as secular activities have taken place here over a period of 3-4000 years.

We are in a farming district where roads lead to three valleys. Goods might easily have been exchanged. The grave contents also show that this area once had a geat economic importance, reaching a climax in the Iron Age.
