Jhikargachha Upazila (Jessore district) with an area of 307.28 sq km, is bounded by Chaugachha upazila on the north, Kalaroa upazila on the south, Jessore sadar and Manirampur upazilas on the east, Sharsha upazila on the west. Main rivers are Kobadak, Betna.
The location of the Jhikargacha town is 23.1042469N 89.0974689E. Jhikargachha (Town) stands on the bank of the Kobadak, consists of 9 wards and 14 mahallas. The Jhikargachha Municipality was established in 1988. The area of the town is 16.34 sq. km. The town has a population of 27823; male 50.88%, female 49.12%. Literacy rate among the town people is 48.3%. The town has one dakbungalow.
Jhikargachha thana was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of 11 unions, 164 mouzas and 179 villages.
Archaeological heritage and relics: Remnants of the Rajbari of Mukut Roy at Laujani (12th century), Dargah of Gazi Kalu.
Historical events: Jhikargachha is named after the idogo planter Jhinkar. Bir Shresta Nur Muhammad Sheikh was killed on 5 September 1971 at village Goal Hat in an encounter with the Pak army.
As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Population 235882; male 51.24%, female 48.76%; Muslim 93%, Hindu 5.72% and others 128%.
Religious institutions: Mosque 305, temple 17 and church 4, most noted of which are Kayem Kola Mosque, Gadkhali Kali Mandir.
Literacy and educational institutions: Average literacy 27.7%; male 35.3% and female 20.1%. Educational institutions: college 5, high school 32, madrasa 14, government primary school 72, non-government primary school 39.
Main occupations: Agriculture 43.85%, agricultural labourer 29.33%, wage labourer 2.71%, commerce 10.47%, service 3.56%, industry 1.58%, transport 2.21% and others 6.29%.
Land use: Total cultivable land 23464.18 hectares; fallow land 93.08 hectares; single crop 1.27%, double crop 75.92% and treble crop 22.81%. Cultivable land under irrigation 87.27%.
Land control: Among the peasants 26% are landless, 53% small, 20% intermediate and 1% rich.
