Lloyd's Building (London)

United Kingdom / England / London / Lime Street, 1
insurance company, office building, high-rise, 1986_construction

The Lloyd's building is the home of the insurance institution Lloyd's of London, and is located at One Lime Street, in the City of London, England. It was designed by architect Richard Rogers and built between 1978 and 1986. Bovis were the management contractor for the scheme. Like the Pompidou Centre (designed by Renzo Piano and Rogers), the building was innovative in having its services such as staircases, lifts, electrical power conduits and water pipes on the outside, leaving an uncluttered space inside. The 12 glass lifts were the first of their kind in the UK.

  • built on the site of the 1928 Lloyd's Building
  • The 1928 building thus became known as the Old Old Building; the 1958 building opposite becoming the Old New Building (having formerly been the New Building) and the current edifice acquired the monicker of the New New Building. Confused? None of those who worked there thought so - it was just as natural progression :)
  • watched the old old building being demolished, turned into a very big hole in the ground aided by the use of explosives then watched the building that is there now being built from an office opposite. An interesting experience I must say albeit a noisy and dusty one!
  • not that the building was built from the office I worked in you understand, he adds just in case someone gets the wrong end of the stick........
