Island of 'Ua Pu, 3rd largest of the Marquesas Islands. The only one of the Marquesas that was united as a single kingdom at the time of the arrival of Europeans, the tribes of 'Ua Pu seem to have been in perpetual alliance with the tribes of Te I'i, the western alliance on Nuku Hiva, the largest of the Marquesas Islands. 'Ua Pu is home to the highest peaks in the Marquesas Islands, including 4 spires that arise in the center of the island like cloud-shrouded steeples on a massive verdant cathedral.
