Island of Hiva 'Oa. Longest, and 2nd largest of the Marquesas Islands. Site of Atuona, former administrative center for the Marquesas, and still the de facto administrative center for the southern islands. In ancient times, divided between powerful alliances of Pepane in the east and Nuku in the west.
The island was the final home of French painter Paul Gauguin and Belgian singer Jacques Brel, both of whom are buried in Calvary Cemetery, overlooking Atuona.
