Tahuata is the smallest of the inhabited Marquesas Islands, in French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. It is located 4 km (2.5 mi.) to the south of the western end of Hiva Oa, across the Canal du Bordelais, called Ha‘ava in Marquesan.
Island of Tahuata. First landfall of European explorer Álvaro de Mendaña, the first European to explore Polynesia, in 1595. 6th largest of the Marquesas Islands. The terrain is everywhere too rugged to allow for economical construction of an airstrip. Best anchorage, and site of primary settlement is at Vaitahu.
