Shinto shrine located on the Mount Atago. This is the head shrine of nine hundred Atago shrines around Japan, popular for their divine favor of fire prevention.
The shrine was known as Hakuun-ji Shugendo temple dedicated to Atago Gongen (Shinto kami Izanami as the avater of Buddhist bodhisattva Jizo) before the Meiji Restoration. Soon after the order of Shinto-Buddhism separation (1868) was issued, the Hakuun-ji was reorganized into the Atago-jinja Shinto shrine.
