Khara Dar means "Saltish Gate", derived from the Fort Gate which faced the sea, built in the 1790s, by the then ruler of Karachi Khan of Kalat.

Today the area is inhabited by the Memon community mostly, who are active businessmen and traders, and have maintained their way of life despite of their phenomenal business success.

The area has small residential flats, and shops. The few old restaurants of the are are very popular serving the pakistani dishes.
