This third secret Tunnel under the DMZ was dug by North Korea (DPRK), and was found by South Korea (ROK) in October 1978. It is believed he tunnel was dug to provide troop access by the DPRK to the south in the case of military conflict.

The total length of tunnel is 1635 meters, which reaches 485 meters over the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) to south, and 1200 meters on the North side. The reached a depth of 73 meters underground through granite stone, and was 2 meters high and 2 meters wide.

Following the discovery, South Korea (ROK) sealed the tunnel with three blockades of concrete, and equipped the tunnel with CCTV 170 meters into the tunnel for monitoring the north half.

The site has been opened for the public to explore the remaining 265 meter length of the tunnel on the southern side.

North Korea denied aggressive intentions and claimed the tunnel was for coal mining. The fact that it reaches beyond the MDL and the construction methods makes their intention hard to deny.

The tunnel is approximately sloped by 3 degree to the North, so water can drain back to the northern side. The holes drilled for dynamite all face to the south, and a layer of black Coal was painted to granite stone, to disguise the granite in a ruse that the tunnel was built for coal mining.
