Longtime history professor at UGA, 1966-1994. Foremost authority on founder of Georgia, James E. Oglethorpe. Nominated for Pulitzer Prize in 1977 for biography "Oglethorpe in America." Wrote and/or co-wrote over 20 other books or articles on Colonial and Georgia history. Editor of Georgia Historical Quarterly 1974-1980. Instrumental in fostering historic preservation movement in many Athens neighborhoods. Faculty chairman of UGA's Georgia History Club, that met many nights at Allen's Bar & Grill in the Normaltown area of Athens. A true inspiration to many of his students.
