Settlers Hill, which operated for 24 years beginning in 1982, was a primary waste disposal site for Kane, Du Page and western Cook counties prior to its closing. The facility is owned by Kane County and was operated by Waste Management of Illinois, Inc.

Today, the sites landfill gas-to-energy plant generates 6.2 megawatts of electricity from the decomposing wastes buried there. The electricity equals the power generated by approximately 19,000 tons of coal a year. That power is conveyed to the City of Geneva, which distributes it to area residents and businesses.
