Tevatron is a circular particle accelerator at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and remained the highest energy particle collider in the world until collisions began at the Large Hadron Collider in Europe. The Tevatron is a synchrotron that accelerates protons and antiprotons in a 3.9 mile ring to energies of up to 1 TeV, hence the name. The Tevatron was completed in 1983 at a cost of $120 million and has been regularly upgraded since then. The Main Injector was the most substantial addition, built over five years from 1994 at a cost of $290 million.

The Tevatron ceased operations on September 29, 2011 after the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) made it obsolete. Fermilab scientists now work with the LHC when performing energy related experiments.

During construction of the Tevatron, over 5,000 tons of armor plating from US Navy warships were used to shield the outer walls of the accelerator ring. This armor plate came from the former Aircraft Carriers USS Antietam (CV-36), USS Bunker Hill (CV-17), USS Lake Champlain (CV-39), USS Philippine Sea (CV-47) and USS Princeton (CV-37), the former Heavy Cruisers USS Baltimore (CA-68), USS Fall River (CA-131) and USS Macon (CA-132) and the Light Cruisers USS Worcester (CL-144) and USS Roanoke (CL-145).
