Spilsby is a Lincolnshire town famous as the birthplace of Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin, who died aged 59 on his last search for the north-west passage. It is now thought that Franklin and his crew perished after becoming lost, disorientated due to lead poisoning: food supplies taken by the expedition were preserved by the (then) relatively new process of canning and the tins were sealed with the poisonous metal.
Franklin was a veteran of the sea battles of Copenhagen and Trafalgar. In 1836 he was appointed Governor of Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land).
