Urk is a municipality and a town in the Flevoland province in the central Netherlands with a population of 17,000.
Urk was formerly an island in the middle of the Zuiderzee. When the Zuiderzee was closed off and the Noordostpolder was reclaimed, Urk became connected to the mainland, then part of the mainland. Excluding water, it is the smallest municipality by area in the Netherlands, since the none of the surrounding countryside is included.
