contaminated site

This is the old Union Bay coal wharf, was where coal mined in the Cumberland area was loaded onto ships. Some coal was also made into coke for the steel industry. These activities led to the contamination of the site from coal and coke waste. Current plans for the site include full environmental remediation, fish habitat rehabilitation work for the creek flowing along its north side and eventual development. The proponent has a plan for housing, retail space and a golf course which would revitalize the community of Union Bay, but a bunch of stupid hippies have opposed the plan flat out without looking at the benefits. The developer has even proposed a centralized water treatment facility for the whole community, but the stupid hippies can't even see beyond their backwards noses to realize how that would help everyone...Stupid hippies. Present here, on Denman and on Hornby...

  • In responce to the comments above...what do you expect? People on the island have a too laid back attitude towards everything. The Hippies (more like the decendents of the cowards that fled here during Vietnam) are determined to have their little "utopia" without regard of the reality of other people's lives. One can only hope that eventually their kind will die off and be replaced with those who want progress and are willing to temper that progress with a respect for nature.
